Project Associate

The Project Associate supports the design, documentation, and delivery of architectural projects in all phases of development. This position contributes to high-quality architectural solutions while collaborating with project teams, consultants, contractors, and clients. The Chicago studio engages in a diverse portfolio of custom residential, commercial, and hospitality projects, both local and national. The role includes professional development opportunities through mentorship, project ownership, and cross-office collaboration.

Position Summary

Reports To: Studio Director / Project Manager / Partner
FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Assist in developing architectural designs from conceptual phases through construction documentation.

· Prepare construction documents, presentation drawings, and 3D visualizations/renderings.

· Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and internal project teams to achieve project objectives.

· Participate in client meetings, internal design reviews, and project planning sessions.

· Collaborate with colleagues across Northworks’ offices to maintain consistent design standards and knowledge sharing.

· Ensure adherence to project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.

· Maintain awareness of relevant building codes, zoning regulations, and permitting requirements, particularly in Chicago and other urban jurisdictions.

· Contribute to a positive and professional studio environment, adhering to firm policies and procedures.

Other Duties

· Assist with research, material selections, and site visits as needed.

· Support firm-wide initiatives, professional development programs, and office events.

· Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Studio Director or Project Manager.

Qualifications

Education:

· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture or Design from an accredited institution.

 

Experience:

· 2–5 years of professional experience in architecture or design.

Technical Skills:

· Proficiency in Revit is required.

· Experience with Enscape, Lumion, Rhino, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) preferred.

· Strong graphic communication skills; ability to clearly convey design ideas visually and verbally.

 

Professional Competencies:

· Solid understanding of architectural detailing, construction methods, and documentation standards.

· Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks while contributing effectively to a team environment.

· Commitment to professional growth through mentorship, project ownership, and cross-office collaboration.

 

Working Conditions:

· Primarily in-office work in a professional studio environment.

· Occasional travel to project sites within Chicago and surrounding areas may be required.
