Meadow Residence

This residence is thoughtfully positioned within an expansive meadow to engage the site’s defining natural features—its winding river, tranquil pond, rolling topography, and sweeping mountain views. Organized as a series of interconnected gabled forms, the home blurs the boundary between architecture and landscape, creating an immersive experience rooted in the rhythms of the Mountain West.

Rather than treating the stream as a backdrop, the design makes it an integral part of daily life. Outdoor terraces, walking paths, and carefully framed views maintain a constant relationship with the water, creating moments of discovery throughout the property while reinforcing the connection between architecture and landscape.

The earliest site studies focused on preserving the natural meadow while positioning the home to capture mountain views and engage the existing water features. Rather than creating a singular object in the landscape, the residence was organized as a series of forms that follow the site’s contours and maintain a light footprint across the property.

The home’s composition evolved through studies exploring how traditional mountain forms could be reinterpreted for contemporary living. Breaking the residence into interconnected volumes creates a more human scale while defining distinct living spaces, maximizing daylight, and strengthening the relationship between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.

STANDOUT FEATURES

A network of walking paths meanders through native grasses and stands of mature trees, linking the residence with the broader site and encouraging exploration beyond its walls. Natural materials—including stone, timber, and muted metal finishes—draw inspiration from the surrounding environment, lending the home a timeless mountain-modern character that feels both refined and deeply connected to place.

The architecture is defined as much by what surrounds it as by the structure itself, creating a home where the landscape is an integral part of the living experience.

ON REFLECTION

The project demonstrates how architecture can emerge from the characteristics of a site rather than simply occupy it. By allowing topography, water, and long mountain views to shape every design decision, the residence offers an experience that changes with the seasons and remains inseparable from its surroundings.
